Work @ the Wilds
American Elm Trials
Participating Partners: U.S. Forest Service
Summary: The goal of this project is the restoration of the American elm into forested landscapes in the eastern US with subsequent natural propagation and regeneration. Over 100,000 trees have been screened for Dutch elm disease tolerance. 5 cultivars have been identified that exhibit a DED tolerance. A total of 21 trees have been planted at The Lake Trail area to test their long-term resistance to DED. The trees will be allowed to naturally propagate. Consistent monitoring will be done to evaluate long-term disease tolerance. Eventually, we hope this project will help us be able to reintroduce American Elm back into the common landscape.
