ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would like to acknowledge many people for helping me during my doctoral work. I would especially like to thank my advisor, Michael Knee, for his generous time and commitment. Throughout my doctoral work he encouraged me to develop independent thinking and research skills. He continually stimulated my analytical thinking and greatly assisted me with scientific writing.

I am also very grateful for having an exceptional doctoral committee and wish to thank Dietz Bauer, Pablo Jourdan, and Robert Klips for their continual support and encouragement.

I wish to thank Tara Vantoai for allowing me to use her lab and equipment for the RAPD work. I am also very grateful to Carlos Menezes for initially teaching me the RAPD method. I thank Mark Lagrimini and Nitya Jocob for helping me with DNA extraction.

I'd like to thank those who helped me collect big bluestem seeds from various Midwestern sites including the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (Div.of Natural Areas and Preserves), the Ohio Nature Conservancy, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Missouri Botanical Garden at Shaw Arboretum, the Konza Prairie Research Center, Ben Torke, who assisted me with Indiana and Kansas seed collections, and Christian Hopka, who assisted me with Wisconsin seed collections.

I am extremely grateful for the assistance, generosity, and advice I received from Dr. Joseph Morton and his staff at the International Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Germplasm in Morgantown, West Virginia. Their assistance made it possible for me to complete the identification of arbuscular mycorrhizal species in the Ohio remnant prairies.

I owe a special note of gratitude to Joe Phillips for assisting me with miscellaneous tasks such as plant harvesting, data entry, soil collecting and root washing. This was especially helpful during my late months of pregnancy.

I extend many thanks to my colleagues and friends, especially Albert Modi, Nitya Jacob, Soni Shukla, Tina Rivera, Laura Thomas, Laura Deeter, and Max Teplitski. I would like to thank Regina Vann for being so organized and helpful, Sharon Treaster for introducing me to the local Ohio Natural History members such as Jim Davidson and Jack McDowell who were insightful in teaching me about native Ohio prairies. I am also thankful to the greenhouse staff for helping me maintain and care for my plants.

Finally, I'd like to thank my family. My father extended his passion for plants and nature to me while my mother was a constant source of support. I'm grateful to my sisters for their encouragement and enthusiasm. I'm especially grateful to my husband and best friend, Gary, for his patience and for helping me keep my life in proper perspective and balance. His knowledge of computers was also extremely helpful.

This research was partially funded by the Ohio State University Graduate Student Alumni Research Award. I extend thanks to Gail Griffin for doing an excellent job with overseeing and managing the award distribution.
